Chair of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine

Maine Medical Center

Portland, Maine

The Chair of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Maine Medical Center serves as the principal academic, clinical and administrative leader for the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.  The Chair is accountable for the development and maintenance of efficient and effective clinical operations of the Department’s 15 divisions, promotion of collaborative work relationships, professional development and wellness initiatives across the Department.

The Chair also provides stewardship of the Anesthesiology Residency training program and the Department’s role in the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) Maine Track program affiliated with the Tufts University School of Medicine.  The Maine Track program provides for a continuous 3-year curriculum that is based in Maine following the first year in Boston.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced physician and administrative leader to assume leadership of an incredibly qualified and talented group of sub-specialized physicians and CRNAs in a growing academic environment.  The Chair will guide the expansion of Maine Medical Center’s surgical platform and lead a department that is well supported by the organization and enhanced by its collaboration with Spectrum Healthcare Partners.

Maine Medical Center (MMC) is part of an integrated health care system, MaineHealth, which includes 9 hospitals, home health, Maine Behavioral Health and NorDx Laboratories.  The Chair of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine reports to the Regional Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at MMC and is expected to collaborate with MMC’s Chief Academic Officer, MaineHealth’s CMO, and the CMO of the MaineHealth Medical Group.  This will require working relationships with MMC’s Department Chairs, MMC’s Graduate Medical Education leadership and MMC’s UME leadership.

This position requires a dynamic, compassionate physician and administrative leader with experience in the growth of a program in a similarly complex organization.  The successful candidate will be an advocate for the clinicians, students, staff and patients; will support and foster a diverse and inclusive environment; and be committed to mentoring and training the next generation of providers.

The Chair is expected to focus the majority of their professional effort (0.6 FTE) on administrative tasks, but will also be expected to hold a clinical role (0.4 FTE) within the Department.

Qualifications:

  • Substantial (7+ years) progressive clinical and administrative leadership experience
  • Academic credentials appropriate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor or Professor preferred
  • Demonstrated high level leadership skills with proven ability to cultivate collaboration and build consensus across diverse clinical and administrative stakeholders, and across organizational boundaries
  • Experience mentoring and developing junior faculty and recruiting diverse trainees, staff and faculty
  • Knowledge of healthcare operations, hospital administration and strategic planning
  • Knowledge of process improvement methodologies
  • Commitment to fostering and advancing a collaborative, respectful and equitable environment where learners, staff, and clinicians can thrive in an ever-changing global community
  • Board certification in Anesthesiology
  • Licensed or eligible for medical licensing in Maine
