**Special Announcement**
from Dr. Sean Kennedy, AACD President

AACD President's Message
July, 2008

Once again, the annual PeriOPro workshop was a great success. The theme was how to use consultants, and the meeting brought together users, prospective users and the consultants themselves for several lively discussions and insightful presentations. As always, the networking proved to be a valuable feature of the event. This is what AACD is all about – bringing together people who manage Operating Rooms in a critical, collegial, and above all an informative atmosphere.

As you all know by now, Dr. Michael P. Smith was unanimously elected Vice-President/President-Elect of the AACD in the recent special election to fill that vacancy. Again, I want to thank the many members who voted.

Usually, the President-Elect has some time to get used to the position before becoming President. Fortunately, Mike is the sort who hits the ground running and has the innate talent to lead an organization such as ours. Just about a year ago, I made the decision to retire from Medicine in July, 2008, after 35 years in practice. Mike immediately became an important part of AACD succession planning. I was very pleased that he accepted the challenge and received unanimous support in this role.

AACD has a clear mission to encourage safe, efficient, patient-oriented management of operating rooms. I believe that mission is best accomplished by an active leadership and membership, made up of practicing clinicians and administrators. For that reason, I announced to the Board last year my intention of stepping down from AACD leadership upon my retirement. This will become effective on July 1, 2008. At that time, in accordance with our bylaws, Mike Smith will become the President of the AACD.

I wish Mike great success in this office, and I am confident that AACD is in good hands under his stewardship. I am grateful for the opportunity I had to serve on the AACD Board. It's a great organization, and will get even better under Mike's leadership.
