Dr. Richard Urman serves as the Jay J. Jacoby Professor and Chairman in the Department of Anesthesiology at The Ohio State University and Wexner Medical Center and Health System Chief of Anesthesiology. Prior to this role, he spent 17 years at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH)/MGB and Harvard Medical School, establishing himself as a leader in academic anesthesiology.

His exceptional educational background includes a BA from Columbia University, MD from Harvard Medical School, and MBA from Harvard Business School. He completed anesthesiology training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and holds multiple certifications including Certified Physician Executive (AAPL), Certificate in Administration & Finance from Harvard Extension School, and is a Fellow of the Association of Anesthesia Clinical Directors (FAACD), serving as Board member and Treasurer.

Research & Funding Excellence

Dr. Urman has received significant funding from prestigious organizations including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), AHRQ, Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF), ASA Professional Committee on Diversity (as mentor), Foundation for Anesthesia Education & Research (FAER), and industry partners. His research interests focus on acute and chronic pain, pharmacology, informatics/financial modeling, and patient safety.

He has published several hundred research papers and edited numerous influential books, including "OR Leadership and Perioperative Practice Management," "Anesthesia Outside the Operating Room," "Pocket Anesthesia, ICU and Pain" series, and "Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) - a Complete Guide to Optimizing Outcomes." He is also a founding board member of ERAS-USA.

Editorial Leadership & Professional Recognition

Dr. Urman's editorial contributions include serving as former Editor-in-Chief of the Perioperative Care & Operating Room Management Journal and current Associate Editor for Anesthesia & Analgesia and Executive Editor for Journal of Clinical Anesthesia. He served as the Endowed Morgan-Zinsser Fellow at the Harvard Medical School Academy and received the 2020 Distinguished Educator in Anesthesiology Award from both the ASA and the Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA).

His professional service includes serving on the FDA Anesthetic & Analgesic Products Advisory Committee, National Quality Forum, and chairing the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) Development Committee. He also serves as a member of the Board of Governors of the Society for Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement (SPAQI) and previously served as the BWH Perioperative Medicine Fellowship Director.
